The job of a COMMERCIAL ELECTRICIAN

A commercial electrician is a licensed professional that focuses on wiring and electrical systems in offices and other commercial buildings. This means that as a commercial electrician, they work with bigger systems in large edifices, like offices, restaurants, high-rise buildings, government offices, and shopping malls, to name a few. Although there are a lot of aspects of our job and training that are similar to what residential electricians do, there are crucial factors that need to be considered when fixing wirings and electrical systems for large buildings.

Here are some of the duties that we carry out:

As a commercial electrician, we inspect, install, repair, and maintain electrical systems in commercial edifices, like malls, groceries, bars, manufacturing plants, and more. We also cater to apartment buildings, which are generally considered commercial rather than residential.

Our duties include:

  1. Inspecting electrical systems to ensure they are safe and uphold the building code.
  2. Planning and diagramming electrical systems, including tubing and piping.
  3. Working from blueprints from the general contractor.
  4. Providing wiring for air-conditioning and refrigeration units.
  5. Ensuring the continuity of wiring using electrical test meters and ohmmeters.
  6. Installing wiring and electrical components, including lights and switches.
  7. Supervising/guiding teams of electricians and trainees.
  8. Planning electrical systems for new buildings.
  9. Diagnosing and repairing electrical wirings.
  • Reading and analyzing technical drawings pertaining to electrical systems.

Common projects

These are the kind of commercial lighting that we cater to:

  • Parking lot lighting
  • Landscape and security lighting
  • Motion lighting
  • Timers and occupancy sensors
  • Exterior lighting installation
  • Recessed lighting
  • Fluorescent and LED fixtures
  • New construction wiring
  • Service and maintenance agreements
  • Electrical systems upgrades
  • Circuit installation and upgrades
  • Code updates and adjustments
  • Dedicated computer circuitry
  • Electrical safety inspections
  • Transfer switches
  • Shock and fire prevention
  • Surge protection
  • Generator installation and repair service

If you need to install or repair parking lot lighting for added safety, we can evaluate your current building and provide the necessary recommendations to ensure that you and your employees or tenants will always have a safer environment wherever you are in your office. We can also install outdoor lighting without reducing visibility for motorists or wasting energy.

Commercial electricians can also help you cut back on electrical bills and improve your building’s energy efficiency. We can install energy-efficient lighting and lighting controls, such as occupancy sensors, timers, fluorescent bulbs, and the like. We will advise you of the best electrical solutions for your business.

Typical work environment

Commercial electricians, like us, generally work indoors. We also spend a good amount of time in our work truck going through the electrical plans and such. Our work is often physically demanding, as we sometimes need to crawl into small spaces and move around a lot. On top of that, we are also constantly exposed to the dangers of working with electrical systems, such as fires, shocks, and other injuries from tools. We are, however, required by law to wear safety equipment to reduce these risks.

Training and licensing

Licensing requirements vary from state to state. Most states require separate licensing for residential and commercial electricians. This is because the wiring and electrical systems in commercial settings are different from residential structures. Commercial buildings use three-phase power, while residential settings use one-phase. Commercial electricians need to have separate training to be able to work with significant differences.

Just like any type of electrician, you will need to have a certain number of hours of classroom learning and on-the-job training and work experience to be a certified commercial electrician. The apprenticeship program will give you the necessary experience to be an effective electrician for commercial spaces.

Finding the best commercial electrician for the job

Finding the best commercial electrician for your commercial electrical needs is important for the safety of your workplace or apartment building.

The first thing you need to consider when looking for the right man for the job is to find out a commercial electrician’s experience and knowledge. How many years have they been specializing in this type of work? Do they have the proper licensing?

The next thing you need to do is to confirm whether they have insurance coverage or not. It is important to know that you won’t be liable for any injuries incurred by the electrician while on the job. Being insured also means that you won’t have to pay for any damages should something go wrong.
